Demystifying EU Labelling Agenda – Exclusive with Joe Regenstein

We talked to Dr Joe M. Regenstein about the proposed amendment to European Union’s Act 205 to label all meats from unstunned animals – a basic requirement for Halal and Kosher slaughter.

Dr. Regenstein, a professor in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University, New York who also heads the Cornell Kosher and Halal Food Initiative, presented a paper at the 3rd World Halal Research Summit in Kuala Lumpur sometime in April 2011.

Quote Highlights:
“I believe, from the animal’s point of view, when done right – and this is really optimal – unstunned slaughter is actually better.”
“It is not about animal welfare, it is not about the quality of slaughter, but it is a political agenda.”
“If you’re going to label, let’s label everything, which the meat industry does not want to do.”
