Now you see me descending gloriously from heaven… and… now I'm back in heaven.

This is what they have to say about their Halal California peacock meat:

“Our “Halal Peacock” is processed in “State-Of-The-Art” plant devoted to Halal slaughter in Los Angeles, California, USA. The concept of Halal and Zabihah is very important to practicing Muslims. Halal is an Arabic word meaning allowed or lawful. The word Zabihah means to slaughter animals in accordance to Sharia. To determine whether the meat is considered Zabihah Halal:

  • The Peacock should be hand slaughtered with an invocation of blessing from God.
  • Slaughtering also requires slitting the front neck from the vein to vein.
  • The blood should be drained completely before the head is removed from Peacock.
  • The Peacock should be in legal possession of the owner, i.e. one cannot slaughter without legal possession.
  • The Peacock is not sick or tortured.
  • The Peacock needs to be slaughtered by a Muslim.
  • Peacocks cannot be slaughtered in front of another Peacock or any animal or bird.

Zabihah Halal is promoting animal welfare. We need to be kind and humane to the animals that are slaughtered. We also need to make sure that we minimize the risk of diseases that are in the blood of an animal by draining the blood.”

Below is what the Ulamas gotta say about eating peacock meat:

From: WorldofIslam.info

“Praise be to Allaah. It is permissible to eat peacock meat because the basic principle is that it is halaal. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):  “He it is Who created for you all that is on earth” [al-Baqarah 2:29]

And it does not come under the same heading as the things prohibited in the hadeeth: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade the eating of every animal that has fangs and every bird that has talons. Narrated by Muslim, 3574.

And it is not harmful, so it is permissible to eat it. And Allaah knows best.
- Shaykh Dr. Khaalid al-Mushayqih”

So basically for the Sunnis, peacocks are Halal. But the Shias, they’ve got two opposing fatwas, as below:

Syed Khoi – Maslah/Rule No : 2633 pg 391

“A Peacock and the different types of Crow are haraam”

Syed Sistani – Maslah/Rule No : 2699, pg 398

“As an obligatory precaution, one should refrain from eating meat of all types of crows. Other birds like the hens, the pigeons, the sparrows including the ostrich and the PEACOCK are HALAAL to eat…” (Pg 490, English Version of Tawsee)

So if you are a Shia, you should check with your Imam. For the Sunni, you may increase the population of peacock if you wanna reduce the price. Well, anything will become cheaper if produced in millions (I prefer fish and chips, but would try grilled peacock meat if it’s FREE. I’m so cheap…).
